Visit the Severn: 1774 Shipwreck The Severn, a merchant vessel, foundered in Lewes Harbor in 1774 with no loss of life. In 2004 an Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment project caused thousands of objects from the Severn to be cast ashore. Additional study located the wreck site and recovered in situ material.
A visit to Lewes, Delaware, and the laboratory that houses this material is an option for Thursday, February 28. Three times have been scheduled at the laboratory, 12 noon, 1 pm, and 2 pm, where Faye Stocum will provide background information and an opportunity to see some of this material.
There is a vast quantity of stoneware water bottles, and various metallic objects from stirrups to candlesticks to cast soldiers. All you would expect of a fully loaded cargo vessel on its way from Europe to an American port!
Along with the tour of the lab, some material is on display in the Zwaanendael Museum, also located in Lewes. There is no fee for this museum since it is part of the state system. While in Lewes you may want to check out the shops and restaurant. There are the outlet stores on Rt. 1 also.
Zwaanendael Museum at the corner of Savannah Rd and Kings Highway Enter Lewes by traveling east on route 9 from Route 1. Route 1 is a major north/south route in eastern Sussex County, Delaware. Just before the bridge is FrontStreet. Turn Left onto Front Street. Follow this. It will become Pilottown Road. When you see the University of Delaware facility keep going. You will cross a small bridge. Make the next right turn and the PEL laboratory will be in front of you.
